Beatriz Gutierrez Hernandez is an illustrator and animator born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico. Beatriz was always drawn to an artistic career; as a child she began creating small illustrated books with different animals as characters. Beatriz graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in Communications Design, with a focus in illustration. She has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators, Fishs Eddy, and Animation Block Party, among others.

Her picture book biography of Benito Juarez, BENITO JUAREZ FIGHTS FOR JUSTICE, was published by Laura Godwin Books in 2023, and received a prestigious Ezra Jack Keats Honor Award in February of 2024. She also illustrated DREAMS FROM MANY RIVERS (text by Margarita Engle) for Laura Godwin Books and SANTIAGO’S ROAD HOME (text by Alexandra Diaz) for Paula Wiseman Books. Most recently, she illustrated a picture book for Neal Porter Books/Holiday House, DESERT SONG (released in 2024, with text by Laekan Zea Kemp). DESERT SONG was also published in a Spanish language edition.

What’s Next? Beatriz is at work on a new picture book featuring two sisters who create a sea-based fantasy while stuck in big-city traffic.
