Tomie dePaola was one of the best known authors and illustrators of books for children. His publishing career spanned more than 50 years and he wrote and/or illustrated nearly 300 books. CHRISTINA’S CAROL, published by Simon & Schuster, and THROUGH THE YEAR WITH TOMIE dePAOLA, published by Magnificat/Ignatius, are his most recent books, although there are several more books yet to be published. Tomie dePaola and his work achieved the rare status of being recognized with both a Caldecott Honor and a Newbery Honor award, and his many other awards included the New Hampshire Governor’s Arts Award of Living Treasure and the 2011 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award. Tomie passed away in March of 2020, but you can still visit his website at www.tomie.com.
What’s Next? Tomie left text and artwork in varying stages of completion, some of which will be published in the coming years: WHERE ARE YOU, BRONTE? (with art by Barbara McClintock) by Simon & Schuster in 2025, and CELEBRATE TOMIE (with text by Jarrett Krosoczka) by Abrams Children’s Books. Aladdin Books is in the midst of re-publishing a series called “Giants,” written by Jane Yolen and with art by Tomie, and several new titles are being added. In addition, representatives of Tomie’s estate have found other stories and sketches which they may make available to publishers in the future. Finally, there are a number of books from all stages of Tomie’s career for which Tomie’s estate controls all rights, either via reversion or copyright recapture.
